Biographie : Né à Likasi (RDC) en 1941. Noviciat dans l'Ordre des Bénédictins jusqu'en 1962. Etudes de philologie romane et de philosophie à Kinshasa et à Louvain. Thèse de doctorat en 1970. Enseigne à l'UNAZA. Quitte le pays en 1979 pour revenir à Louvain, enseigner à Paris puis, à partir de 1981, aux Etats-Unis (Haverford College, Stanford, Duke). Poète, essayiste, romancier.
