Résumé/Présentation |
"I examine a selection of authors whom I group into two categories of Afropeans; Francophone Afropeans, and post-migratory Afropeans. I first outline aspects of the works and careers of post-migratory postcolonial minorities of African heritage, such as authors Julian Delmaire, Dembo Goumane, Thomté Ryam, Abd al Malik, N?Sondé and Bessora, who were born and raised in France or Francophone Europe (in Bessora?s case, as she was born in Switzerland and raised in Belgium). I then compare the careers and predominant themes in their works to a second set of Afropean authors. Specifically, I investigate the role of geography in both the fictional work and careers of a selection of contemporary Francophone African authors with closer links to the US (Miano, Mabanckou and Waberi) and who might be better described as ?Afropolitans' (to use a term popularized by Achille Mbembe in French but originally coined in English by Taye Selassi). In so doing, I hope to nuance the term ?Afropean? to include the considerable influence of continents beyond the binary of African and Europe, whilst also showing the limits of the label as it has been popularized, as it restricts certain references just as it emphasizes others." |
