Résumé/Présentation | "[...] The Shaba I and Shaba II rebellions are very controversial issues and, until now, no study has been done to determine their causes. We propose that the causes were: (1) disenchantment of the Lunda tribe; (2) nationalization of the copper industry and the subsequent Africanization and Zairianization measures; (3) formation of a new class structure during the Second Republic; and (4) institution of a one-party state. It has been argued that the problem of ethnicity, that is, the disenchantment of the Lunda tribe, was the most salient cause of the rebellions. [...] This study has been put forth as a contribution to the body of knowledge on the political dynamics of Zaire. Specifically, we have ascertained the causes of the two rebellions, which had been matters of extreme controversy on both domestic and international fronts. Undoubtedly, the answers produced in this study will not only help the general public to better understand the internal and external political dynamics of Zaire, but also, and most importantly, they will provide a useful basis for sorting out the various conflicting political, social and economic interest in Zaire." |
